Use a subdomain or your own domain
A public dashboard always has its /status/dashboard/<token> link. On Pro,
Team and Business, it can also be served on its own hostname:
| Kind | Example | Ready when |
|---|---|---|
| Pingstack subdomain | acme.pingstackhosted.com |
As soon as you save it |
| Custom domain | status.example.com |
After Pingstack finds your DNS records |
Each custom dashboard can have one of each. The account’s Overview can’t have a domain. Admin access is required, the same as for publishing. On the Free plan the Domains section explains that domains need a paid plan.
Open the dashboard’s edit page and find the Domains section. A domain only shows the dashboard while the dashboard is public. While it’s private, its domains show a “not available” page.
Pingstack subdomain
Section titled “Pingstack subdomain”Under Pingstack subdomain, enter a name and save. The name must be 3 to
63 letters, numbers or hyphens, with no dots. Some names, such as www,
app, status and admin, are reserved, and each name can only be used
once. Use Change subdomain to rename it. The old name stops working
right away.
Custom domain
Section titled “Custom domain”Under Custom domain, enter a hostname you control, such as
status.example.com, and choose Add domain. You can paste a full URL;
Pingstack keeps only the hostname. Then add the two records the app shows
at your DNS provider. For status.example.com they look like this:
| Type | Host | Value | TTL |
|---|---|---|---|
| TXT | _pingstack-challenge.status |
pingstack-verification=<token> |
Auto |
| CNAME | status |
domains.pingstackhosted.com |
Auto |
The TXT record proves you control the hostname, and the CNAME sends visitors
to Pingstack. Enter the Host exactly as the app shows it. Your DNS provider
adds example.com for you, so don’t type the full hostname there. Use the
app’s Copy buttons for the Host and Value, since the token is unique to
this domain and this account. Leave the TTL at your provider’s default.
For a root domain such as example.com, the app shows _pingstack-challenge
for the TXT host and @ for the CNAME host. Most providers don’t allow a
CNAME at the root, so use their ALIAS or flattening record for @ instead.
Pingstack checks the records for you, every few minutes for the first hour and then hourly for 7 days. Choose Check now to check right away; you can do that a few times a minute. Pointing here appears once the hostname reaches Pingstack. Verification only needs the TXT record, but visitors need the CNAME to reach the page.
A hostname can’t be changed after it’s added. Remove it and add the new one.
Domain status
Section titled “Domain status”| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Live | Verified and serving the public dashboard |
| Waiting for DNS | The TXT record hasn’t been found yet |
| Record missing | It was verified, but the TXT record is gone. The app shows the date it will be released |
| Paused | The account’s plan no longer includes domains |
| Dashboard private | Verified, but the dashboard isn’t public |
| Claimed elsewhere | Another account verified this hostname first |
| Verification lost | The TXT record was missing for 7 days and the domain was released. Add the record again to verify it |
Keep both records
Section titled “Keep both records”Leave the TXT record and the CNAME in place for as long as you use the domain. Pingstack rechecks verified domains daily. If the TXT record has been missing for 7 days, the domain is released so the domain’s new owner can claim it.
Only one account can verify a hostname. Several accounts can add the same hostname while it’s unverified, but once one of them verifies it, the others show Claimed elsewhere and nobody else can add it. If you see that for a domain you own, remove it here or wait for the other claim’s TXT record to go missing for 7 days.
What a domain serves
Section titled “What a domain serves”A dashboard’s hostname serves only its public status page, /wallboard,
the check pages linked from it, and its branding images. Every other path
returns “not found”, so sign-in and app pages never appear under your
domain.
If your plan changes
Section titled “If your plan changes”If the account moves to a plan without domains, the domains stay on the
account and nobody else can claim them. Visitors see “This status page is
temporarily unavailable” with a sign-in link for the owner. Upgrading brings
them back. The /status/dashboard/<token> link keeps working on every plan.
Remove a domain
Section titled “Remove a domain”Choose Remove domain and confirm. The hostname stops serving the dashboard straight away, and anyone can claim it afterwards. Remove the DNS records at your provider too.
Automation
Section titled “Automation”The API and MCP tools return
domain_url and domain_wallboard_url for public dashboards with a
verified domain. Domains can only be added or removed in the app.
