Connect and verify alerts

An Editor or Admin can manage notification groups. Connecting a Slack workspace requires Admin access.

  1. Open Notification groups and create a group, such as Operations.
  2. Add an email notification channel with an address you control.
  3. Edit your check and select this group in its notification settings.
  4. Save, then verify the check has a successful result.
  5. On a nonproduction test target, cause a controlled failure. For a heartbeat, stop reporting long enough to exceed the established deadline and grace.
  6. Inspect the check’s incident history and Notification history.
  7. Restore the target or resume successful heartbeats. Verify the check returns up and that recovery delivery appears in notification history.

Do not disrupt a live service just to test documentation. Use a disposable test check and explain the test to its recipients first.

An incident records the trouble episode; notifications are delivery attempts to configured recipients, not a guarantee that someone read the message. For personal email/SMS/voice, add account members or rosters to the group and have them configure their own notification preferences.

If an alert is missing, inspect group assignments, schedules and delivery history before changing the monitoring threshold.
